Catch the Fallen – for those who lament over lost lovers

first thing, i want to apologize to the folks in catch the fallen for not being more timely in posting this review.

second, i usually try to stick to reviews about bands/events here in the bay area, but im making an exception for this band because they were seeking reviews & i offered to oblige, helping the both of us to get more exposure. so with out further delay…

catch the fallen are a five piece rock band out of west covina, down in southern california. they combine elements of punk, emo, pop, & even some electronica. right now they have their debut album up on their myspace, for you to listen to the six tracks. each song has uptempo dancability, but each are very distinct from the last. the first two tracks grab you & throw you right into the groups high energy, & beckon you to join in on the sing along hooks. but then the third track comes to mix things up, with a poppy upbeat intro riff, reminiscent of a epitaphesque power punk anthem. this leads you along for a few verses before crushing you with a slow & heavy chorus. another great track, one that is certainly a unique break in the basic punk set, is track 5 (oh, none of the songs have official names), a primarily electronica track with a simple “unce, unce” beat & low crackle distorted vocals, but again, eventually slams you with aggression at the end. im not sure where they recorded, but the quality is top notch.

fronted by a female vocalist, her voice is very delicate yet confident. she carries a lot of the melody, yet is supported by a sure foundation of guitar work. semi-technical, but mostly just solid & powerful, the songs are structured in the familiar post punk formula that seems to be rather prevalent these days. backed up by heavy & simple bass lines, & then kicked up by the excellent drum patterns.

this is a great first effort for these guys. everything is solid, & tight. with just enough of a unique sound to help them stand out, cacth the fallen are ready to make heads turn. looking to start touring in support of these new tracks, keep an ear open for them. for a preview, check out myspace.com/catchthefallen.
