Re-viewing the DIY scene

the ish

i am a self proclaimed music journalist currently living in the san francisco bay area. i have a big interest in the local & diy music scene. i have grown up within this scene, & it has helped me become who i am. i have learned a lot from the experiences ive had within it. through this music scene, many of my basic beliefs have been formed & solidified. the diy scene, especially the underground punk/hardcore scene, is strongly coupled with certain political & social views, & often a punk show can be accompanied by some sort of social demonstration. many books about these issues can be bought at a show, or a conference might be followed by a concert. the most basic of these beliefs is tolerance & equality for diversity. where i once primarily focused on the music scene alone; the bands, the venues, the shows, & the recordings, ive recently started using my tumblr & Instagram pages to focus on those things, & have decided to start using this site to talk more about my experiences within the larger DIY/indie scenes, beyond just music; branching into graphic art, film, writing/publishing, etc. i plan to include more of my personal thoughts & feelings, my opinions & the story of my life, of myself. i appreciate the many people who have enjoyed my previous articles here, who have reached out & shared their experiences & interests within the DIY music scene. ive even made a few dear friendships because they stumbled across this page or my corresponding social networks, & reached out to me. i hope that as i move forward, in new directions, those people & new ones will continue to appreciate what i have to say & that they will also continue to share their own stories & experiences. peace & love.

  1. Check out taqwacore… Muslim punk rock music scene that is exploding now within the Muslim youth community around the world. Taqwacore has captured the spirit of ’77 and the punk sensibilities and coupled it with getting back to the roots of Islam… stripped of all the garb and decorations that Muslims have drpaed over Islam… making it a confusing thing for many within the Muslim community. So check out this: http://www.taqwacore.com/

  3. Greetings from Texas, C the K – we’ll be passing through San Francisco among other places west this summer and are looking for venues which will book D.I.Y. riot folk punk. Got any ideas? Our myspace is myspace.com/wjdaysndaze. Most of our shows have nee in Texas – Houston, Austin, San Antonio, San Marcos – but we recently played Brootal Sun Fest in Tucson and did a show at the Heaven & Hell collective in Albuquerque heading back. This summer we are looking for shows in Reno, Las Vegas and San Francisco, so finding you was sort of a lucky stroke. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated – take care,
    Jesse, -Days N Daze

      • Dear Chid,

thanks for responding. We’ll be in and around the area starting July 13 through July 17. We arent headliners, we’re looking to get on a bill with other bands like us. The more established, the better. We’re bringing one supporting act with us. Check her out at myspace.com/marissasjams

Mostly we need a venue that books all ages shows with a slant towards DIY, punk or indie. If you can recommend some venues like that, you’d be doing us a solid.

        Thanks,

        Days N Daze

        • so i chatted with a young lady that does booking for a diy space in redwood city. its called the oddstad gallery. at this time there are no shows booked there, so we might just set up a show just for the dates youll be in the area. ill also check with some places elsewhere in the bay area. i just recently went to a show at a well known punk venue in the east bay called burnt ramen. so ill keep working. if we end up booking a show just for yall, ill do my best to get a hold of a well established headliner.

          • Isn’t Burnt Ramen shut down?

            • well, yeah that was what i thought. they reopenned it, for how long i have no clue. but it was a bad ass show & i loved the venue!

  4. Hello!

July 16th through the 18th, Bismarck, North Dakota bands Slave to the Mushroom Cloud and Zoo on Fire will be in and around the SF bay area. Could you recommend us any all ages venues?

Slave to the Mushroom Cloud is a guitar/bass/drums/voice trio; Zoo on Fire is a quartet: voice, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums. Both groups have that punk rock obsession with aggression and spirit but also pop music’s obsession with melody and composition. We’re currently scheduling a summer tour across the western half of the United States.

    Thanks!

    • hey, thanks for checking out the blog. i listened to both bands & really liked what i heard. i’ll certainly put your name out to some local venues for those dates. are you looking for any supporting acts? & i help manage a small recording studio, & produce albums for a pretty deacent price, if youre interested in doing some recording while in the area those few days? anyways, yeah, we’ll keep in touch. chiddy the kidd

  5. Thanks, man!

Whether we need supporting acts is something we’ll determine after we find a venue, I suppose. Do you have some people you’d recommend? What are the venues you’re going to mention us to? I’d like to email them myself, if possible.

The studio offer is very appreciated! but we already have some excellent recording hook-ups up here in the NoDak.

    Thanks again!

  9. I have always believed the DIY scene is the best for true music especially playing in a punk band, however, this video interview with Michael Gudinski, Owner of The Mushroom Group has an interesting take on the validity of DIY musicians http://bit.ly/9RuhrF
